Fiesta Island, which is near Mission Bay and Sea World, was magically transformed on April 23 and 24th into a beach soccer haven for adults and youth players.

The first beach tournament of the 2011 season is the Beach Soccer Jam and this event announces Spring in the San Diego soccer world.

This was also first tournament under the San Diego Soccer Club moniker, the SDSC B10 team took to the field against AC Milan. The game was fairly even until SDSC broke it open with a quality finish. This first strike would lead into goal after goal by SDSC at a rate that could not be matched by Milan. The sand offered a new obstacle for these boys but they adapted and overcame with quality defense, great touches and quick passing.

Beach Soccer Jam, according to Raffi Rutolo, “was a success and the participating teams enjoyed the competition and the atmosphere. The Sockers Legends game and the Brazilian production show, samba and Capoeira added to the festivities. On the men pro division, we were fortunate to have the U.S. National Team and the San Diego Sockers. The event was lots of fun and a great time was had by all.”

“This year’s Beach Soccer Jam was nothing short of fantastic,” said Rick La Salle, Co-Director of 2011 Beach Soccer Jam.
“There was just so much excitement throughout the weekend. Beach soccer is a whole different version of the game. Youth teams having fun challenging each other on the sand and adult teams going head to head.”

There was so much excitement on the beach, especially on the pro circuit. The San Diego Sockers were amazing and obviously enjoyed the tournament.

As La Salle Said, “How about those San Diego Sockers, arguably the best indoor soccer franchise of all time dominated on the sand and won it all for the 3rd straight year! It was great watching the fans see them compete in amazement. Then everything stopped and longtime radio and television personality Gary Kelley introduced the San Diego Sockers’ Legends, who again showed the fans why they won so many championships, year after year …The worst part of Beach Soccer Jam is that we have to wait a whole year to do it again. I can hardly wait.”
The Legends game was truly one for the books. Former professionals took to the main field and reignited their fiery passion for the game. Spectators gathered and watched as names like Brian Quinn, Cha Cha Namdar, Raffi Ruotolo, and Juli Vee lit up the scoreboards again. In a tightly contested game that was nearing its completion, the ball fell to Juli Vee’s feet and he could only do one thing with it, hit the winner, and he did so to the delight of the crowd.
The San Diego Sockers won an exhibition match. The Sockers took on the Shoreline Soccer Club in the final game of the day at Fiesta Island. The action definitely had a more heated overtone to it as both teams fought hard in yet another tightly contested game. Both teams bypassed passing on the sandy surface and went for more aerial service to their teammates. After the first period the players from SSC began to divert their passionate attention towards the referees for not calling what they believed were fouls. This emotion would eventually manifest itself in the third period in a flurry of fouls that would mar an otherwise well played match. The Sockers were able to hit first with an early goal and maintained their lead despite multiple goals being scored to take the win.

Last year, the Sockers beat the Sand Crabs in an amazing, sand flying, pro player falling, fabulous match.

It is with great pleasure and pride that we inaugurate this column on the website of Shoreline Beach Soccer. Here we are going to talk about this exciting young sport that has not yet completed two decades of existence. In this weekly space for everything involved in beach soccer. From the introduction practical to high performance, news on the main teams in the world to major national championships and of course the most important tournament of the year, the 2011 FIFA World Cup, which this year will be held in Ravenna, Italy.

First, let me tell you a little bit about myself. I like to illustrate my beginning because it serves as a motivation for the readers. The beginning takes time and patience as well discipline and determination to overcome obstacles.

I started as a teacher at Carioca School, a beach soccer school in Leblon, the South side neighborhood of the city of Rio de Janeiro. I have 20 years of experience and teaching 15 to 18 years old girls at that time really brought to myself the desire to work with the teams and the sport. The classes were at first only physical but as we progress the girls felt the taste for learning the beach soccer, technically and tactically. I was developing my way of teaching learning from those experiences Many were correct and some were not. It was a wonderful period, where I taught something, but I learned a lot from those girls who were not professional beach soccer players but performed the drills with great passion, something very important in any work. After two years, the owner of the school, Marcelo Mendes, got control over the State Team from Rio de Janeiro and offered me a position as fitness trainer but that’s another story!

Today I believe that they are accomplished in their fields of work, but here’s my thanks to ALL of my former students, especially some that formed my first team: Bruna, Lele, Woolf Mariana, Mariana Villares, Renata and Patricia , Alice, Marcela Puga, Isabela, Julia Travassos, Andrea Guaratop, Drica Villares, Eduarda and Dr. Tati.

MIAMI CUP- this last Sunday, finished third edition of the Miami Cup competition involving the teams from Brazil, which took the champion, Mexico, USA and Spain. For the Brazilian team, the competition served as preparation for the playoffs for the next World Cup. Mexico, already qualified for next World Cup, has already started its preparation and promises to be a difficult team to be beat.USA and Spain and began the process of renewal of their selections because they will not participate in the next World Cup. Congratulations for USA, which achieved major victories over Mexico and Spain, which will certainly give a lot of motivation to follow the USA seeking the development of beach soccer.

Manny thanks

Gilberto da Costa
